POST RENAISSANCE BY ARKAN ZAKHAROV
The city of Detroit was once the driving force of American industry. A city that also gave rise to both Motown and techno. But also a city with a well documented decline and social issues.
‘Post Renaissance’ sees the city through the fresh eyes of Arkan Zakharov — a Russian-born, Canada-raised and NY-based photographer — whose instinctive fashion imagery often challenges the orthodox and immediate. Zakharov’s personal work is an extension of this ethos; a near constant exploration of his fascination with people and the world around them captured and lost again through his atemporal stories on @arkanzakharov
Inspired by the same idea as Carl Craig’s Landcruising LP, Zakharov traversed the glimmering downtown streets and desolate urban sprawl to discover the contrasting architecture and environments that coexists across greater Detroit. The images are presented as unexpectedly harmonious diptychs to highlight the reality of urban living in Detroit — a city than can rise to the sky and fall back to floor from one block to another.
